Kirirom National Park, known as the “Mountain of Joy,” is a refreshing escape from the tropical heat of the lowlands. Nestled in the Cardamom Mountains, it is Cambodia’s first national park and a favorite retreat for those seeking pine forests, cool mountain air, and peaceful nature trails.

🗺️ Geography

Kirirom is situated on a high-altitude plateau in Kampong Speu Province, approximately 120km southwest of Phnom Penh. Rising 675 meters above sea level, its unique landscape is characterized by rare high-elevation pine forests, rolling hills, and hidden lakes that form the headwaters for the region’s many streams.

🌤️ Climate

Due to its elevation, Kirirom enjoys a micro-climate that is significantly cooler than the rest of Cambodia:

  • Refreshing Air: Temperatures here are typically 5°C to 10°C lower than in Phnom Penh, making it a year-round “natural air-con” destination.
  • The Seasons: The Dry Season (Nov – Apr) is ideal for hiking and camping under clear skies. During the Wet Season (May – Oct), the pine needles turn a vibrant green and the waterfalls are at their most powerful and spectacular.

🚐 How to Get There (from Phnom Penh)

Travel from the capital to Kirirom takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours via National Road 4. At QuickGoTaxi, we provide private door-to-door transfers to ensure you arrive relaxed and ready to explore:

  • Private Car / Sedan: Best for couples or solo travelers looking for a quick, comfortable ride.
  • SUV (Lexus/Highlander) – 3 Seats: Recommended for small groups who want extra legroom and a smooth ride on the mountain roads.
  • Toyota Alphard VIP – 4 Seats: The ultimate luxury choice with reclining seats and premium climate control—perfect for a high-end mountain getaway.
  • Hyundai Starex Minivan – 7 Seats: The best option for families or groups of friends, providing ample space for luggage and camping gear.

🚗 Getting Around

  • Private Vehicle: Most visitors keep their private taxi for the day to hop between the visitor center, various waterfalls, and the reservoir.
  • Hiking & Cycling: The best way to experience the pine forests is on foot or by renting a mountain bike at the local resorts.
  • Ox-Cart Rides: For a traditional touch, you can take a slow-paced ox-cart ride through the local communities near the park entrance.

🌲 What to Do

  • Pine Forest Trekking: Wander through the “cathedral” of pine trees—a sight unique to this part of Cambodia.
  • Chambok Waterfall: Take a guided hike to this 40-meter-high waterfall and enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural pools.
  • King Sihanouk’s Former Villa: Visit the historic ruins of the royal summer residence, offering a glimpse into Cambodia’s 1960s “Golden Era.”
  • Kirirom Lake & Reservoir: A serene spot for a picnic, kayaking, or simply enjoying the panoramic mountain views.
  • Bird Watching: Keep an eye out for rare bird species and the shy pileated gibbons that call this forest home.
