Kom Pot Tour

Bokor Hill Station is one of Cambodia’s most atmospheric destinations, where French colonial history meets Khmer legends amidst a landscape often swallowed by mist.
Here is a closer look at the four specific landmarks you mentioned:
1. Lok Yeay Mao Monument
Located about halfway up the mountain, this massive 29-meter-tall statue is a mandatory stop for both locals and travelers.
- The Legend: Lok Yeay Mao is a revered ancestral spirit and the “Protector of the Coast.” Legend says she was a brave commander who defended the region against Siamese invaders.
- Significance: Travelers and truck drivers stop here to leave offerings—often fruit, flowers, or even wooden phalluses—to ask for safe passage through the winding mountain roads.
- The View: The statue faces the sea, offering a stunning panoramic view of the Gulf of Thailand and the Kampot coastline.
2. The Old Catholic Church
Built by the French in the 1920s, this stone church is one of the few structures that survived the systematic destruction of religious buildings during the Khmer Rouge era.
- Atmosphere: The church is famous for the orange-red lichen that covers its grey stone walls, giving it a hauntingly beautiful appearance. Inside, it is hollowed out and “ghostly,” with sunlight (or mist) streaming through empty arched windows.
- Dark History: During the 1970s and 80s, the church was used as a strategic bunker and barracks by Khmer Rouge soldiers. You can still see bullet holes in the walls from skirmishes with the Vietnamese army.
- Status: It has recently been returned to the Catholic Church and has undergone some preservation work, though it retains its weathered, “abandoned” feel.
3. Wat Sampov Pram (Five Boats Pagoda)
Perched on a sheer cliff edge at the very top of the plateau, this temple was built in 1924 by King Monivong.
- Why the Name? “Sampov Pram” means “Five Boats.” It refers to five massive, boat-shaped rock formations nearby. According to legend, these represent the treasure ships of Prince Preah Thong and the Dragon Princess, the mythical founders of the Khmer people.
- The Experience: It is the highest pagoda in Cambodia. When the clouds part, the view from the cliff behind the pagoda is spectacular—you can see all the way to Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island (called Koh Tral by Cambodians).
- Vibe: It is much more serene and spiritual than the colonial ruins, often filled with the sound of chanting and the scent of incense.
4. Bokor Hill (The Plateau)
The “Hill” itself is a high-altitude plateau (1,080 meters) that serves as a cool escape from the tropical heat.
- The Weather: It is famously unpredictable. You can go from bright sunshine to being completely “blinded” by thick, swirling fog in a matter of seconds.
- History: Originally a French resort town (Hill Station) where officials escaped the heat of Phnom Penh, it was abandoned twice: once in the 1940s during the First Indochina War and again in the 1970s.
- Modern Day: Today, the hill is a mix of “Ghost Town” ruins and rapid modern development. Beside the old ruins, you’ll find the massive Sokha Thansur Resort and a world-class casino, which creates a strange contrast between the 1920s and the 2020s.
